LEAF supported Sheila Beaudette's challenge of the regulation of the Ontario Family Benefits Act which stated that family benefits could only be provided to those who are "living as a single person". This rule would act to deny women benefits if they have a relationship with a man, even if the man in question does not live with them and has no legal responsibility for them or their children.

Although the law was struck down based on this ruling, the law was re-implemented in 1995 (see Falkiner v. Ontario).
