A Critical Look at the Persons Case and its Legacy was the first panel in LEAF\u2019s Personhood Speaker Series, and took place on October 26, 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT THE SPEAKER SERIES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Personhood Speaker Series created a space to discuss what makes a \u2018person\u2019 and whose voices need centering in conversations about gender equality in 2020 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT THE PANEL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Persons Case is a 1929 legal decision of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that included \u201cwomen\u201d in the legal definition of \u201cpersons\u201d, giving certain women the ability to be appointed to the Senate of Canada. More generally, the decision gave&nbsp;broader legal recognition to&nbsp;some&nbsp;Canadian&nbsp;women.&nbsp;Although LEAF has celebrated the Persons Case in past years, we recognize that many women were not included in that decision and were not considered \u2018persons\u2019 under Canadian law until decades later. \u202fThere are those whose \u2018personhood\u2019 is still challenged or excluded today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our panel featured <strong>the&nbsp;Honourable&nbsp;Jody Wilson-Raybould, PC, QC, MP<\/strong>, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and the first Indigenous person in that position, <strong>Bonnie Brayton<\/strong>, the National Executive Director of the&nbsp;DisAbled&nbsp;Women\u2019s Network (DAWN) Canada, and <strong>Arleen Huggins<\/strong>, Partner at Koskie Minsky LLP. <strong>Charlene Theodore<\/strong>, the first Black lawyer to lead the Ontario Bar Association&nbsp;(OBA), moderated the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can watch the recording of the panel discussion below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Personhood Speakers Series, S1: What Makes a Person?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DYJRIS-JKP8?list=PL4b3wslz7lfwUgBIIux5ZNDnp01bzI9tq\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This program has been accredited by the Law Society of Ontario and contains 1 hour and 30 minutes of EDI Professionalism content.&nbsp;For Nova Scotia lawyers, consider including this course as a CPD learning activity in your mandatory annual Continuing Professional Development Plan as required by the Nova Scotia Barristers\u2019 Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SUPPORT OUR WORK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF\u2019s work is only possible with the generous support of our donors and funding partners.
