A new trial has been ordered for a cab driver accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the back of his taxi. She was so intoxicated the police shook her awake, and her urine soaked underpants were in the hands of the accused, yet he was acquitted because the first trial judge determined that the woman may have been conscious at the time the sexual activity started and capable of consenting. In Nova Scotia, the Court of Appeal has ruled that a woman and her three children should not have been disqualified from receiving social assistance because her partner didn\u2019t go to an appointment with his employment counsellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support of pro bono counsel, community partners and our generous donors, the Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) intervened in these important cases. Together, we are ensuring that women\u2019s substantive rights are recognized by Canada\u2019s Charter of Rights and Freedoms\u2014and shaping the national conversation on gender equality. It is our pleasure to invite you to join us as we celebrate the recognition of women\u2019s legal rights and another fabulous year for the Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) at our annual Persons Day Gala.<br>We\u2019re hosting this year\u2019s event at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/venuerentals.tpl.ca\/the-bram-bluma-appel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bram and Bluma Appel Salon<\/a><\/strong> at the Toronto Reference Library on <strong>Tuesday, October 9, 2018.<\/strong><br>We\u2019ll share a wonderful evening of cocktails, culinary delights, and community with hundreds of supporters from the legal, feminist, academic, activist, corporate, and union sectors. Plus, this year, we\u2019re pleased to present <a href=\"https:\/\/theghomeshieffect.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Ghomeshi Effect<\/strong><\/a>, a documentary dance-theatre performance on sexual violence and the legal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Person\u2019s Day Gala is our largest and most important event.
