Her extensive experience as a litigator in public law, human rights and <em>Charter <\/em>cases has enabled LEAF to expand its important work in the courts and in law reform initiatives.\u00a0Most recently, she argued on behalf of LEAF in <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/the-institute-for-the-advancement-of-aboriginal-women-iaaw-and-the-womens-legal-education-and-action-fund-leaf-continue-to-seek-justice-for-cindy-gladue-at-the-supreme-court-of-canada\/\">R. v. Barton<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/leaf-to-appear-before-the-supreme-court-of-canada-in-r-v-gagnon\/\">R. v. Gagnon<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, two critical cases that concerned the law\u2019s response to sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been a huge fan of LEAF\u2019s work for many years,\u201d says O\u2019Brien, \u201cand am very honoured to have participated in our cases over the past few months. I\u2019m also excited for my new role and for the opportunity to lead LEAF in fighting for women and girls\u2019 equality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Called to the bar in 2000, Shaun is a skilled and experienced appellate advocate. For many years, she was a lawyer and partner at Cavalluzzo LLP, where she developed a deep commitment to defending and\u00a0advancing fundamental rights, with a particular focus on the rights of women. Until recently, she also served as President of the Board of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, which provides legal and other services to women experiencing violence.<\/p>\n<p>In-coming LEAF board chair Elizabeth Shilton is excited about Shaun\u2019s new role: \u201cShaun has already made her mark at LEAF as Legal Director.\u00a0 Her talent, energy and vision will be a huge asset to LEAF as we confront the many challenges ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>LEAF looks forward to pursuing its mandate to advance the equality of women and girls in Canada through litigation, law reform and public education under Shaun\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF)<\/strong> works to advance the substantive equality rights of women and girls through litigation, law reform, and public education.
