{"id":11102,"date":"2019-02-01T10:38:29","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T15:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?p=11102"},"modified":"2020-10-25T19:34:23","modified_gmt":"2020-10-25T23:34:23","slug":"shaun-obrien-appointed-to-the-superior-court-of-justice-of-ontario","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/news\/shaun-obrien-appointed-to-the-superior-court-of-justice-of-ontario\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaun O\u2019Brien Appointed to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Congratulations to Shaun O\u2019Brien, who has been appointed a judge to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto by the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice O\u2019Brien joined LEAF as Legal Director in April 2018 and subsequently became LEAF\u2019s Executive Director &amp; General Counsel.&nbsp; She represented LEAF in several interventions related to the substantive equality rights of women and girls, including<em> &nbsp;<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/the-institute-for-the-advancement-of-aboriginal-women-iaaw-and-the-womens-legal-education-and-action-fund-leaf-continue-to-seek-justice-for-cindy-gladue-at-the-supreme-court-of-canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>R v Barton<\/strong><\/a><\/em> (addressing the law of consent in the context of the sexual assault and death of an Indigenous woman, Cindy Gladue)<em>, <\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/leaf-to-appear-before-the-supreme-court-of-canada-in-r-v-gagnon\/\" rel=\"noopener\">R v Gagnon<\/a><\/strong><em> (addressing the law of consent in a sexual assault perpetrated by a member of the military against a colleague), and <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/leaf-files-factum-in-christian-medical-and-dental-society-of-canada-et-al-v-college-of-physicians-and-surgeons-of-ontario\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada et al. v College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)<\/strong><\/a><em> (addressing women\u2019s access to reproductive choice)<\/em><em>. <\/em>LEAF is very grateful to her for all her service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to joining LEAF, Justice O\u2019Brien was a lawyer and partner at Cavalluzzo LLP, where she developed a deep commitment to defending and&nbsp;advancing fundamental rights, with a particular focus on the rights of women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Read the Department of Justice news release <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-justice\/news\/2019\/01\/government-of-canada-announces-judicial-appointments-in-the-province-of-ontario.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF)<\/strong> works to advance the substantive equality rights of women and girls through litigation, law reform, and public education.
