{"id":11330,"date":"2019-06-26T16:41:11","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T20:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?p=11330"},"modified":"2021-01-29T14:25:28","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T19:25:28","slug":"leaf-strongly-opposes-any-attempt-to-roll-back-the-law-societys-statement-of-principles","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/news\/leaf-strongly-opposes-any-attempt-to-roll-back-the-law-societys-statement-of-principles\/","title":{"rendered":"LEAF strongly opposes any attempt to roll back the Law Society\u2019s Statement of Principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) has been an ongoing supporter of the Law Society of Ontario\u2019s Statement of Principles (SOP) requiring licensees to acknowledge their obligation to promote equality, diversity and inclusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Read LEAF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-11-29-LEAF-ltr-to-LSUC-re-statement-of-principles.pdf\">letter to Treasurer Paul Schabas and Benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada<\/a> stating its support for the SOP requirement.<\/p>\n<p>LEAF opposes the current attempt by some new benchers to roll back and modify the diversity and inclusion initiatives, including the SOP. These matters come before convocation tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>LEAF calls on the LSO to continue to promote equality in the legal profession and opposes any attempt to roll back these important first steps towards confronting prejudice and inequality.<\/p>\n<p>One of LEAF\u2019s founder mothers, Mary Eberts, along with Helen Ross and Nadine Otten, have prepared a thoughtful paper, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Not-Tyranny-Reflections-on-the-Law-Society-of-Ontario-Statement-of-Pr...-1.pdf\">Not Tyranny: Reflections on the Law Society of Ontario Statement of Principles<\/a>\u2019, which underscores how the SOP is entirely consistent with the LSO\u2019s role in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion \u2013 and with the commitment to the Rule of Law which every barrister and solicitor undertakes when sworn into the bar.<\/p>\n<p>They have also prepared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Quick-Guide-to-the-Law-Society-of-Ontario-Statement-of-Principles-2.pdf\">Quick Guide to the Statement of Principles<\/a> for a summary.<\/p>\n<p>Any changes to the SOP or the diversity and inclusion initiatives will be a step backwards for the legal profession \u2013 and for LEAF\u2019s ongoing fight for equity, diversity and inclusion.
