The <\/span><\/span>Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF)<\/span><\/span><\/a> is a national, charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1985. LEAF works to advance the substantive equality rights of women and girls in Canada through litigation, law reform, and public education using the <\/span><\/span>Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> We are funding three discussion briefs to support our Feminist Strategic Litigation (FSL) Project.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The <\/span>Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF)<\/span><\/a> is a national, charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1985. LEAF works to advance the substantive equality rights of women and girls in Canada through litigation, law reform, and public education using the <\/span>Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, LEAF launched its <\/span>Feminist Strategic Litigation (FSL) Project<\/span><\/a>, funded by the Department for Women and Gender Equality, formerly Status of Women Canada. This three-year project is examining the effectiveness of LEAF\u2019s past litigation work and establishing a five-year strategy for moving forward. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the FSL Project, LEAF will be hosting a two-day conference in Fall 2020<\/span>. This conference <\/span>will bring together community organizations, academics and gender equality advocates to talk about using the law to push for gender equality. In support of this conference, LEAF is commissioning three discussion briefs which will provide background information to symposium attendees on important topics. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Each d<\/span>iscussion brief will comprehensively analyze literature and other forms of knowledge available on <\/span>one of<\/span> t<\/span>hree t<\/span>opic<\/span>s<\/span> (see list of topics below). The author is not intended to conduct original research. Instead, they will create a document which brings together and summarizes existing knowledge. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful applicants will be expected to draft a report of a length suitable for publication in an academic journal. They will also be expected to write a 3 to 5-page executive summary of the report. <\/span>Each discussion brief will consist of a report and executive summary<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful applicants must recognize that readers will have varying levels of awareness of subject matter. Briefs must be written in plain and accessible language and must define or avoid academic <\/span>and legal jargon. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Bringing Intersectional Arguments before the Courts<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
