A Critical Look at the Persons&nbsp;<\/em><em>Case<\/em><em>&nbsp;and its Legacy<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;This series will occur in lieu of the in-person gala that LEAF&nbsp;National&nbsp;traditionally holds to commemorate&nbsp;the&nbsp;Persons decision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Persons Case is a 1929 legal decision of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that included \u201cwomen\u201d in the legal definition of \u201cpersons\u201d, giving certain women the ability to be appointed to the Senate of Canada. More generally, the decision gave&nbsp;broader legal recognition to&nbsp;some&nbsp;Canadian&nbsp;women.&nbsp;Although LEAF has celebrated the Persons Case in past years, we recognize that many women were not included in that decision and were not considered \u2018persons\u2019 under Canadian law until decades later. \u202fThere are those whose \u2018personhood\u2019 is still challenged or excluded today. This speaker series will give us the chance to openly discuss what makes a \u2018person\u2019, who has had delayed access to \u2018personhood\u2019, and whose voices need centering in conversations about gender equality.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe are at a critical juncture,\u201d said Megan Stephens, Executive Director and General Counsel for LEAF. \u201cIf we can take anything away from the past&nbsp;six months, it is&nbsp;that we must be able to question and think critically about the past.&nbsp;Most importantly, we must&nbsp;recognize and&nbsp;acknowledge&nbsp;those&nbsp;instances&nbsp;when&nbsp;we could have done better as a society.&nbsp; We must&nbsp;listen&nbsp;to, learn from, and commit to centering the experiences of those&nbsp;who have been&nbsp;marginalized for too long so we can move forward together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The first panel in the Speaker Series will feature the&nbsp;Honourable&nbsp;Jody Wilson-Raybould, PC, QC, MP, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and the first Indigenous person in that position, Bonnie Brayton, the National Executive Director of the&nbsp;DisAbled&nbsp;Women\u2019s Network (DAWN) Canada, and Arleen Huggins, Partner at Koskie Minsky LLP. Charlene Theodore, the first black lawyer to lead the Ontario Bar Association&nbsp;(OBA), will moderate the event. Un regard critique sur l\u2019affaire Personne&nbsp;et son h\u00e9ritage. \u00bb Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement remplacera le gala national comm\u00e9morant l\u2019affaire \u00ab&nbsp;personne&nbsp;\u00bb organis\u00e9 habituellement par le FAEJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019affaire \u00ab&nbsp;Personne&nbsp;\u00bb est une d\u00e9cision judiciaire de 1929, prononc\u00e9e par le Comit\u00e9 judiciaire du Conseil priv\u00e9, qui incluait les \u00ab&nbsp;femmes&nbsp;\u00bb dans la d\u00e9finition l\u00e9gale des \u00ab&nbsp;personnes&nbsp;\u00bb, donnant ainsi \u00e0 certaines femmes la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre nomm\u00e9es au S\u00e9nat du Canada. Cette d\u00e9cision accordait une meilleure reconnaissance juridique \u00e0 certaines femmes canadiennes. M\u00eame si le FAEJ a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 l\u2019affaire \u00ab personne \u00bb ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, nous reconnaissons que cette d\u00e9cision excluait de nombreuses femmes et qu\u2019elle ne les consid\u00e9ra comme des \u00ab personnes \u00bb en vertu de la loi canadienne que des d\u00e9cennies plus tard. L\u2019identit\u00e9 individuelle de certaines est encore contest\u00e9e ou exclue aujourd\u2019hui. Cette s\u00e9rie de conf\u00e9rences nous donnera l\u2019occasion d\u2019aborder ouvertement la d\u00e9finition d\u2019une \u00ab personne \u00bb, qui n\u2019eut acc\u00e8s \u00e0 une \u00ab identit\u00e9 individuelle \u00bb que tardivement, et dont la voix doit se concentrer sur des conversations concernant l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 des sexes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00ab Nous sommes \u00e0 un tournant critique \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Megan Stephens, directrice ex\u00e9cutive et avocate g\u00e9n\u00e9rale du FAEJ. \u00ab Si nous pouvons tirer une le\u00e7on des six derniers mois, c\u2019est que nous devons \u00eatre capables de nous remettre en question et d\u2019avoir une pens\u00e9e critique sur le pass\u00e9.
