The Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) welcomes the federal government\u2019s budget commitment to advancing gender equality. In particular, LEAF applauds the government\u2019s significant investment in supporting women\u2019s socioeconomic equality, supporting survivors of sexual violence, and taking action to end gender-based violence entirely.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have seen the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated women\u2019s inequality in Canada. Women have been disproportionately driven out of the labour market and caught in the shadow pandemic of domestic violence. The impact has been felt most severely by women belonging to historically marginalized communities, including Indigenous, trans, and racialized women.\u201d  <\/p>Pam Hrick, Executive Director & General Counsel of LEAF<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The federal government\u2019s historic $30 billion investment in a national early learning and childcare system responds to significant, sustained feminist advocacy. It holds the potential to realize substantial gains for the economic and social equality of women, who continue to bear the brunt of childcare obligations both within their own families and in the formal and \u201cshadow\u201d economies.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

LEAF is particularly pleased to see an important investment of $600 million over five years to advance a National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence (NAP), which is grounded in the vital work of feminist organizations and advocates. LEAF is proud to have collaborated with partners across Canada, under the leadership of Women\u2019s Shelters Canada, to call for the development and implementation of a fully funded, intersectional NAP<\/a>. The federal government\u2019s budget commitment includes a much-needed investment of over $200 million to support gender-based violence organizations, who are on the front lines supporting survivors, day in and day out. LEAF is also encouraged to see an investment of over $85 million to support a national program for independent legal advice and representation for survivors of sexual assault, as well as pilot programs for survivors of intimate partner violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAccessible independent legal advice and representation is crucial to helping survivors of sexual violence understand their options and their legal rights, as well as to navigate the justice system. We are pleased that the government is increasing access to justice for survivors while making tangible investments to prevent and eradicate gender-based violence altogether.\u201d   <\/p>Pam Hrick, Executive Director & General Counsel of LEAF<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

LEAF also welcomes simultaneous investments in legal education and services through a Racialized Communities Legal Support Initiative, and the revival of the Law Commission of Canada, which will once again provide independent expert legal advice to the Government of Canada on matters of public interest.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Fonds d\u2019action et d\u2019\u00e9ducation juridique pour les femmes (FAEJ) se r\u00e9jouit de l\u2019engagement du budget du gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral pour promouvoir l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 des genres. En particulier, le FAEJ applaudit l\u2019investissement important du gouvernement \u00e0 l\u2019appui de l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 socio\u00e9conomique des femmes, le soutien aux survivantes \u00e0 la violence sexuelle et la prise de mesures pour mettre enti\u00e8rement fin \u00e0 la violence fond\u00e9e sur le genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Nous avons constat\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19 a aggrav\u00e9 l\u2019in\u00e9galit\u00e9 des femmes au Canada. Les femmes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 forc\u00e9es, de mani\u00e8re disproportionn\u00e9e, de quitter le march\u00e9 du travail et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises dans la pand\u00e9mie fant\u00f4me de la violence domestique. L\u2019investissement historique de 30 milliards de dollars du gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral pour un syst\u00e8me national d\u2019apprentissage et de garde de jeunes enfants r\u00e9pond au militantisme f\u00e9ministe soutenu significatif. Il pr\u00e9sente la possibilit\u00e9 de r\u00e9aliser des gains consid\u00e9rables pour l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique et sociale des femmes, qui continuent de porter la majorit\u00e9 du fardeau des obligations de soins des enfants dans leurs propres familles et dans les \u00e9conomies formelles et \u00ab fant\u00f4mes \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le FAEJ est particuli\u00e8rement heureux de constater un investissement important de 600 millions de dollars pour promouvoir un Plan d\u2019action national pour mettre fin \u00e0 la violence fond\u00e9e sur le genre (PAN), qui est fond\u00e9 sur les travaux essentiels des organisations et militantes f\u00e9ministes. L\u2019engagement du budget f\u00e9d\u00e9ral inclut un investissement indispensable de plus de 200 millions de dollars pour appuyer les organisations de lutte contre la violence fond\u00e9e sur le genre, qui sont aux premi\u00e8res lignes du soutien aux survivantes, jour apr\u00e8s jour. Le FAEJ est \u00e9galement encourag\u00e9 par l\u2019investissement de plus de 85 millions de dollars pour appuyer un programme national de conseils juridiques ind\u00e9pendants et de repr\u00e9sentation des survivantes d\u2019agression sexuelle, ainsi que des programmes pilotes pour les survivantes de violence par un partenaire intime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
