Hon. Kim Campbell, Hon. Anne McLellan and Hon. Frances Lankin will speak to senior players in the women&rsquo;s movement in Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 3, political scientists and constitutional lawyers from across the country will meet with the three politicians in a closed roundtable discussion regarding strategies to put more women on the ballot at all levels of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The June events are a response to Kim Campbell&rsquo;s urging that we &lsquo;stop asking and start demanding&rsquo; women&rsquo;s rights as full partners in the political process\u00a0\u00bb says Rosemary Speirs, Founding Chair of Equal Voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joanna Birenbaum, LEAF&rsquo;s Legal Director, explains that \u00ab\u00a0LEAF is committed to achieving substantive equality for women in Canada.&nbsp; This includes a meaningful right to democratic and political participation and decision-making.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 2, Ms. Lankin, will discuss the long struggle to get more women nominated and elected;&nbsp;Ms. Campbell will explain why it is so important to elect a &lsquo;critical mass&rsquo; of women; and Ms. McLellan will urge us to get tougher in advancing the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three women are winners of Equal Voice&rsquo;s EVE award for leadership in the cause of electing more women. Their discussion will be moderated by well-known writer Michele Landsberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today there are 76 women in the House of Commons, or 24.6 per cent of the 308 members.&nbsp; While this is an increase of 7 female MPs over those elected in 2008, only the New Democratic Party with 40 elected women, or 39 per cent of the NDP caucus, has exceeded the one-third target which experts call \u00ab\u00a0critical mass\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conservatives elected 28 women or 17 per cent of their majority caucus, and the Liberals 6 women, or 17.6 per cent.&nbsp; Elizabeth May became the only elected MP for the Green Party, and one woman was elected for the Bloc Quebecois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the June 3 in-camera roundtable, \u00ab\u00a0Equal Voice and LEAF are asking the experts to put their heads together to discuss how to guarantee that women achieve fairer representation in the seats of political power,\u00a0\u00bb said Ms. Birenbaum.&nbsp; They&rsquo;ll be considering redress under certain sections of the<i>Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms<\/i>, or the <i>Canadian Human Rights Act<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0In both organizations we are acutely aware of the obstacles, but we will be asking the experts to think outside the box and to take into account changing times, including the adoption by many other countries of pro-active measures to ensure better representation of women,\u00a0\u00bb added Ms. Birenbaum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equal Voice is a national non-profit organization created to push for the election of more women to all levels of government in Canada. Madame Campbell abordera l&rsquo;importance cruciale d&rsquo;une \u00abmasse critique\u00bb d&rsquo;\u00e9lues et Madame McLellan va nous presser de faire beaucoup plus pour promouvoir notre cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces femmes sont toutes trois r\u00e9cipiendaires du prix EVE d&rsquo;\u00c0 voix \u00e9gales pour leur leadership dans le projet collectif de faire \u00e9lire plus de femmes. Leur discussion sera anim\u00e9e par l&rsquo;\u00e9crivaine de renom, Michele Landsberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd&rsquo;hui, il y a 76 femmes \u00e0 la Chambre des communes, soit 24,6 pour cent des 308 d\u00e9put\u00e9s. Elles vont examiner la possibilit\u00e9 de recours aux termes de certains articles de la <i>Charte<\/i><i> canadienne des droits et libert\u00e9s<\/i> ou de la <i>Loi<\/i><i>canadienne sur les droits de la personne<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abDans nos deux organisations, nous sommes parfaitement au fait des obstacles, mais nous allons demander aux expertes de sortir des sentiers battus et de tenir compte de nouveaux \u00e9l\u00e9ments, tels l&rsquo;adoption par de nombreux pays de mesures proactives pour garantir une meilleure repr\u00e9sentation des femmes\u00bb, conclut Madame Birenbaum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 voix \u00e9gales est une organisation pancanadienne sans but lucratif vou\u00e9e \u00e0 faire \u00e9lire plus de femmes \u00e0 tous les paliers de gouvernement au Canada.
