Her own story includes overcoming being a high functioning alcoholic who turned from her very successful journalism career with Macleans Magazine where she won prestigious awards, to enroll in Psychology at Smith College, graduating with an MSW and beginning her new life as a psychotherapist, writing coach, and advocate for mental health and alcoholism supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all burnout situations need the affected person to leave their chosen field. Not all burnout experiences involve alcohol. She is expert at helping others to face, understand, and work through their life dilemmas in this time of work overload. Dr. Johnston is an advocate for mental health and alcohol recovery supports, and has contributed to Canadian policy on mental health and alcohol policy. Dr. Johnston will speak for about 40-45 minutes, then there will be time for questions and discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ann Dowsett Johnston is the bestselling author of&nbsp;<\/em>Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol<em>. An award-winning journalist, Ann spent close to 30 years at Maclean\u2019s magazine, moving on to her role as a Vice-Principal of McGill University. In her sixties, Ann enrolled at Smith College, and became a psychotherapist. As well, she teaches her popular online memoir course&nbsp;<\/em>Writing Your Recovery<em>. A prominent advocate for mental health and addiction services, she has won many awards, including an honorary doctorate of laws from Queen\u2019s University.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF Edmonton is celebrating Equality Day in commemoration of April 17, 1985 when Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into effect, guaranteeing substantive equality under the law.
