{"id":7438,"date":"2015-06-03T14:08:52","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T18:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?p=7438"},"modified":"2020-10-26T04:10:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T08:10:40","slug":"leaf-seeks-improved-access-to-safe-legal-abortion-for-pei-women","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/news\/leaf-seeks-improved-access-to-safe-legal-abortion-for-pei-women\/","title":{"rendered":"LEAF Seeks Improved Access to Safe, Legal Abortion for PEI Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LEAF welcomes the June 2<sup>nd<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.pe.ca\/newsroom\/index.php?number=news&amp;newsnumber=10217&amp;dept=&amp;lang=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announcement<\/a> by the government of Prince Edward Island that it is \u201cmoving forward with its commitment to address barriers to abortion access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province announced that it has established a new arrangement with the Moncton Hospital to provide timely access to abortion services for Island women. LEAF applauds the decision to enable women to access the service directly without a doctor\u2019s referral. This is an important step forward. However, the government statement does not address the fact that PEI women must still incur travel costs, child care costs, and considerable inconvenience to access this new option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PEI women are the only women in Canada without any access to safe, legal abortion in their home province. For more than 25 years, PEI has refused to abide by the spirit of the Supreme Court of Canada\u2019s decision in <em>Morgentaler <\/em>by completely denying access to abortion on the Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF is glad to see that the government of PEI recognizes that it \u201chas an obligation to be in line with the <em>Charter of Rights and Freedoms<\/em>\u201d to remove barriers to this safe and legal procedure.
