{"id":8222,"date":"2016-01-20T14:18:57","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T19:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?p=8222"},"modified":"2020-10-25T19:45:27","modified_gmt":"2020-10-25T23:45:27","slug":"jointlettermmiwinquiry","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/news\/jointlettermmiwinquiry\/","title":{"rendered":"Prominent organizations seek commitment that inquiry on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls will be truly national and comprehensive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>January 20, 2016<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Letter-to-Ministers-January-20-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a> released today, five national organizations that have been deeply involved in efforts to expose and address violence against Indigenous women and girls call on the federal government to ensure that the forthcoming national inquiry can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Focus on the extreme violence faced by Indigenous women and girls and bring it to an end by setting out a clear plan of action for all levels of government<\/li><li>Expose the systemic factors contributing to and perpetuating this violence<\/li><li>Ensure the full and effective participation of affected families and communities<\/li><li>Address the needs of Indigenous women and girls, and provide families the answers they need, across all jurisdictions in Canada<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter, written by the Native Women\u2019s Association of Canada (NWAC), Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA), Amnesty International Canada, KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, and the Women\u2019s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), is addressed to the three federal ministers leading current consultations on the design of the inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter sets out initial recommendations based on the organizations\u2019 past experiences with federal and provincial inquiries, and the concerns and recommendations raised by Indigenous women, families and frontline organizations in recent meetings.
