It is crucial to acknowledge this day, especially in the distressing climate of sanctioned misogyny following the US presidential election. Today we reflect on the daily realities of women who face gender-based violence. We remember the fourteen women who were singled out and murdered at the 1989 \u00c9cole Polytechnique massacre because they were women: Genevi\u00e8ve Bergeron, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Lagani\u00e8re, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Mich\u00e8le Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. LEAF also remembers the women and girls who were killed in 2016, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/calgary-taliyah-marsman-sara-baillie-family-statement-1.3681629\">Sara Baillie<\/a> and her daughter, Taliyah Marsman, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2016\/12\/03\/husband-of-toronto-doctor-elana-shamji-appears-in-court-charged-with-her-murder.html\">Elana Fric-Shamji<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many women die from intimate partner <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2016PSSG0241-002546\">abuse.<\/a> Abuse survivors rarely reach out to disclose what is happening to them, and in many instances where they do seek help, they do not receive adequate responses. This must not be tolerated. LEAF will continue to work hard to&nbsp;end violence against women in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF made a significant impact in 2016, intervening in key sexual assault cases and complaints &#8212; the most notable include R v.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/leaf-iaaw-to-monitor-r-v-barton-appeal\/\"> Barton<\/a> (the Cindy Gladue case), and the inquiry into Justice Robin<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/canadian-judicial-council-committee-recommends-justice-robin-camps-removal\/\"> Camp<\/a>. LEAF also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/jointlettermmiwinquiry\/\"> joined<\/a> the call for a strong mandate for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and LEAF\u2019s Legal Director, Dr. Kim Stanton, was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/kim-stanton-advisory-council-appointment\/\"> appointed<\/a> to the Federal Advisory Council on Gender-based Violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Violence against women, including femicide, is distressingly common in Canada. Each incident requires a concerted response.
