{"id":18626,"date":"2021-04-28T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?post_type=publication&#038;p=18626"},"modified":"2022-03-04T09:39:15","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T14:39:15","slug":"deplatforming-misogyny","status":"publish","type":"publication","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/publication\/deplatforming-misogyny\/","title":{"rendered":"Deplatforming Misogyny"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by: Cynthia Khoo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Full-Report-Deplatforming-Misogyny.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> examines digital platform liability for technology-facilitated gender-based violence, abuse, and harassment (\u201cTFGBV\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital&nbsp;platforms&nbsp;play a central role in how we&nbsp;interact&nbsp;and share information&nbsp;with one another, express ourselves, build community, politically mobilize, and participate in public life. They have also simultaneously provided new and efficient mechanisms for abusive users to engage in TFGBV, such as through doxing, stalking, trolling, launching coordinated harassment campaigns, and distributing intimate images without consent. Platform companies&rsquo; design features, business models, content moderation policies, and related decisions contribute to perpetuating a hostile environment for women, girls, and members of historically marginalized and systemically oppressed groups in society. This impacts their right to freedom of expression and their right to equality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This report contains 14 recommendations for federal government action and legislative reform. The recommendations include imposing legal obligations and, in some cases, liability on digital platforms for TFGBV committed by a user.
