In 1995, LEAF provided a submission to the Commission of Inquiry into Certain Events at the Prison for Women in Kingston concerning federally-sentenced Indigenous women and the Healing Lodge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LEAF’s brief highlighted the numerous barriers faced by Indigenous women, including federally-sentenced Indigenous women. It noted the lack of accessible or culturally-appropriate programs for Indigenous women in correctional institutions, and the importance of the establishment of the Healing Lodge in Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LEAF’s brief argued that Indigenous women unable to transfer to the Healing Lodge needed to be provided with programming from an Indigenous perspective. It also argued that there needed to be changes to the classification procedures for federally-sentenced Indigenous women so that more would be classified at a lower risk level and able to access programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
