{"id":18398,"date":"2012-02-27T16:23:17","date_gmt":"2012-02-27T21:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?post_type=submission&#038;p=18398"},"modified":"2020-12-09T16:35:25","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T21:35:25","slug":"bill-c-10-2","status":"publish","type":"submission","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/submission\/bill-c-10-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill C-10: The Safe Streets and Communities Act"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In February 2012, LEAF and West Coast LEAF provided a submission to the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs on Bill C-10: <em>The Safe Streets and Communities Act<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The submission called on the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs to delay the passage of Bill C-10: <em>The Safe Streets and Communities Act<\/em> pending a full consideration of issues including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The impacts of the proposed legislation on women and Indigenous persons<\/li><li>The unjustified financial costs the legislation would impose on provincial and territorial governments<\/li><li>The critical importance of including \u00ab\u00a0safety valve\u00a0\u00bb provisions if the proposed mandatory minimums were to be enacted<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government&rsquo;s obligations under s. 15 of the <em>Charter<\/em> meant that significant amendments to Bill C-10 were required before it could be passed into law. As written, Bill C-10 would have a discriminatory impact on already disadvantaged groups in Canada.
