{"id":23800,"date":"2024-01-17T14:05:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T19:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/?post_type=submission&#038;p=23800"},"modified":"2024-01-17T14:09:15","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T19:09:15","slug":"cdb-technical-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"submission","link":"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/fr\/submission\/cdb-technical-roundtable\/","title":{"rendered":"The Canada Disability Benefit should help disabled people access resources, not stigmatize them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submission to the Office for Disability Issues Employment and Social Development Canada on Administrative Processes for the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2023, LEAF participated in a roundtable discussion with Employment and Social Development Canada regarding administrative processes for the Canada Disability Benefit.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LEAF has been involved in efforts to advocate for both a Canada Disability Benefit and a basic income to address longstanding issues of gender and racial socioeconomic inequality in Canada. In September 2021, LEAF released a report titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaf.ca\/publication\/basic-income-gender-and-disability\/\">Basic Income, Gender &amp; Disability<\/a> authored by Dr. Sally A. Kimpson, RN, PhD.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CDB should reduce poverty, not exacerbate it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Disabled people are among the poorest living in Canada. Disabled women are significantly poorer than disabled men and their non-disabled counterparts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The persistent fear of losing provincial and territorial benefits shapes the lives of disabled women and gender-diverse people. This anxiety produces vigilance. Everyday, disabled people have to strategize the most effective ways to ensure continuation of their benefits.
