Rape culture is the systemic and pervasive normalization of sexual violence against women and gender minorities. As a result, rape culture is harmful because it offers a narrow definition of sexual assault, readily denies women’s experiences of sexual assault and harassment, and perpetuates violent and misogynistic remarks such as those made by Michel FournierSimard, Alexandre Larochelle, Patrick Marquis, RobertMarc Tremblay and Alexandre Giroux.

Degrading remarks about a woman’s person are sometimes shrugged off as a joke between friends and deemed harmless. Patrick Marquis stated, “I would never say that kind of thing out in the public but when it was a private conversation I guess it slipped my mind that that’s really not acceptable.” The fact remains however, that the distinction between private and public is irrelevant comments of this nature are always unacceptable, and the conversation should not be dismissed as merely private social media dialogue between friends. Moreover, Mr. Marquis mentioned his decision to resign was based on the receipt of hate mail and threats which made him feel unsafe in his position. While we recognise how difficult it is to be in a public position where one is a recipient of threats and hate, we do not condone the use of violence or threats of violence as a way of trying to heal from or deal with this type of situation. We urge the men involved to consider how these types of conversations make women feel unsafe in their daily lives, and how engaging in these types of conversations merely perpetuates the experiences that Patrick Marquis suffered through himself.

After learning of her intention to publicize the conversation, Ms. Roy was threatened with legal action by four of the men involved. We commend Ms. Roy for bravely speaking out and releasing the information she was given. The fact that these men, who were peers of Ms. Roy, felt comfortable discussing her using vulgar, offensive, and violent language shows their complete disregard for her as a person and her position as SFUO President. Discrimination and the perpetuation of gender-based inequality cannot be allowed to remain shrouded behind closed doors. The personal remains political.

In light of these events and the ongoing investigation into sexual assault allegations against members of the University of Ottawa men’s hockey team, we know all too well the devastating impact rape culture can and does have on women, girls, and other gender minorities. In a society where gender-based sexual violence is normalized and treated as an inevitable byproduct of societal values and attitudes, more needs to be done to educate, raise awareness, and actively combat rape culture.

We need to promote open and honest dialogue about sexual assault, sexual violence, and larger systemic issues on our campus and in society in general. This includes a focus on bystander intervention. Silence perpetuates rape culture. Being a passive participant in a conversation where blatantly offensive statements are being made is participatory and signals acquiescence. Everyone on campus—and everywhere—deserves to attend school, go to work, and live their lives free of sex and gender-based discrimination, threats of violence, and marginalization. As we are an academic community, we need to create safer spaces and encourage open dialogue about rape culture and preventing violence against women and gender minorities.

We are grateful for Ms. Roy’s leadership and applaud her courage for speaking out. We look forward to working with her, our university administration, and wider community to educate and raise awareness about rape culture.

In solidarity,
ALSA
AWARE
LEAF Ottawa
UOAWL
