Based on the lived experiences of trans women working in feminist organizations across Canada, the Trans Feminine Inclusion in Feminist Workplaces report outlines systemic barriers to trans feminine individuals’ employment and leadership in the feminist sector and provides practical advice to feminist organizations – leadership, workers, and funders – on how to more meaningfully support trans feminine staff.
Our findings reveal a significant gap between the publicly stated values of feminist organizations and the daily reality for many trans feminine employees. The women who were interviewed for this report demonstrate their commitment to their work in the feminist sector and provide invaluable advice as to how to move toward genuine, structural change.
The report is accompanied by a guide, which includes both Calls to Action and a Self-Guided Audit Tool. This guide offers a clear roadmap and checklist that feminist organizations can use to foster equitable feminist spaces in which trans women can make meaningful contributions.
This report was funded by the Fund for Gender Equality Grants Fund at Toronto Foundation, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Government of Canada, and is a collaborative effort between the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), West Coast LEAF, and the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies (CAEFS), in partnership with Wisdom2Action.
