An Evening for Equality 2025: 40 years of gender justice

Thank you for your support and interest! Tickets to Evening for Equality 2025 are now sold out.

For ticketholders, the deadline to submit guest information via Eventbrite has passed. Please email [email protected] if you have any urgent changes to request regarding dietary or accessibility needs.

LEAF National’s Evening for Equality is our largest and most important celebration of the year – the funds raised from this event directly support efforts to advance gender equality rights in Canada year-round.

This year, An Evening for Equality falls on the eve (April 16, 2025) of the 40th anniversary of Equality Day.

On April 17, 1985, section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into effect, guaranteeing substantive equality under the law. That same day, LEAF was founded—by launching no less than three legal challenges to combat discriminatory laws.

In the 40 years since, we’ve advocated for stronger equality rights in over 145 cases. It’s a special day for the LEAF movement, and we’d love for you to be a part of the celebrations.

EVENT DETAILS

On the evening of Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, we’ll welcome hundreds of LEAF supporters to The Carlu in Toronto (444 Yonge St, Unit #7) for a reception and a three-course dinner. We’ll share a wonderful evening with members of the legal, feminist, academic, activist, corporate, and labour communities.

We are thrilled to announce that acclaimed author Tanya Talaga will be our keynote speaker for this special evening.

About Tanya: Tanya Talaga is an acclaimed author, journalist, and filmmaker of Anishinaabe and Polish descent, and a member of Fort William First Nation. Holding five honorary doctorates, she was a journalist at the Toronto Star for over twenty years and is now a regular columnist at The Globe and Mail.

Tanya’s third book, The Knowing, retells the history of this country as only she can—through an Indigenous lens, beginning with the life of her great-great grandmother Annie Carpenter and her family, as they experienced decades of government- and Church-sanctioned enfranchisement and genocide. The Knowing is a seminal unravelling of the centuries-long oppression of Indigenous People that continues to reverberate in these communities today.

Copies of The Knowing will be sold at The Carlu by Another Story Bookshop. Tanya will be holding a book signing at the end of the evening.
