LEAF is thrilled to welcome our new Indigenous Summer Scholar for 2025—Ashley Bach! Learn more about them below.
Ashley Bach – Indigenous Summer Scholar

Ashley (she/they) is a member of the Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation in Treaty 9 territory, but was placed in foster care and adopted out in British Columbia. She is entering her 3L year at Lakehead University’s Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, where she has been actively involved in the law school’s Indigenous community as President of the Indigenous Law Students’ Association and as a Pro Bono Students Canada volunteer for the Mino-Waabandan Inaakonigewinan Indigenous Law and Justice Institute.
Ashley is deeply committed to advancing the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples and nations. She spends much of her time outside of school and work advocating with and for her fellow youth in and from child welfare systems across Canada, including on the National Council of Youth in Care Advocates. She is also one of the representative plaintiffs for the AFN’s class action on the discriminatory underfunding of the First Nations Child and Family Services program and the delay and denial of Jordan’s Principle.
