On May 5, 2026, LEAF provided a submission to the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs urging them to accept the Senate of Canada’s amendments to Bill S-2, An Act to amend the Indian Act (new registration entitlements). The same letter was also sent to Prime Minister Carney and Minister Gull-Masty.
The Senate’s amendments are necessary to end the sex and race discriminaton embedded in the Indian Act‘s registration provisions, which has harmed generations of First Nations women.
Overview of Submission
LEAF urges the government to support the following amendments to Bill S-2:
- Eliminate the second-generation cut-off
- Eliminate the 1985 cut-off; and
- Eliminate the two-parent rule
