Canada delivered on one of LEAF’s key recommendations in Budget 2026 – multi-year funding for the Canada Black Justice Strategy.
Misogynoir in our society means worse outcomes for Black women, girls, trans, and non-binary people who are affected and overrepresented at every stage of the justice system.
This investment, made possible by the advocacy of more than 1000 organizations and individuals across Canada, will help address systemic racism in the justice system, and remove access barriers to social and economic supports – building stronger, safer, and more supported communities.
“Black women, girls, trans and non-binary people are affected at every stage of the justice system: as people who are charged, as survivors of violence and as mothers and parents holding families together. LEAF thanks the Government of Canada for this investment, which will fund community programs built around their needs.” – Ruth Goba, Executive Director, LEAF.
